But talking to the duo together was a real pleasure, especially when Indiewire got to ask them about their interactions before working together on “Grace and Frankie” (leading to Fonda comparing Waterston to her late father Henry).

An edited transcript follows, with mild spoilers for the end of Season 1.

During the TCA winter press tour, Netflix chose to pair Fonda and Waterston together for interviews, and, on the surface, it might have seemed like an odd choice. We were all going, “It’s gonna be serious and sober,” but it’s turning out to be quite a lot of fun.

After all, the only thing their characters have in common is their romantic involvement with Robert (Martin Sheen), to whom Grace (Fonda) was married for decades before Robert and Sol (Waterston) revealed that they’d been having an affair (also for decades). I mean, in general, this feels like a show that’s actually really fun to do.

Her father paid for her lessons, under the tutelage of Lee Strasberg.

After several stage appearances she made her Broadway debut in 1960 in There Was a Little Girl, with Gary Lockwood and Joey Heatherton.

“I did a lot of light comedies as a younger actor,” she said to Indiewire. And that things went deeper.” And I didn’t realize that they’d gone deeper. WATERSTON: Speaking of it in terms of tone and voice, I didn’t know it had a voice. In fact, they were talking about ending it with the wedding. WATERSTON: I never ask ahead because it could change and you don’t wanna get attached to some plotline that you think is gonna happen.

“And there were things about myself then that I didn’t like very much. So, what I found really striking about this show when I first watched it, was that it had a rhythm unlike anything I’d never seen before. Just, it had the joke patter, but it felt very grounded and real. And it’s why it was so interesting to me, when I heard people saying what you’re saying. And also, it’s one of the great advantages of doing a series is that like life, you don’t know what the future holds, so you have to wait to find out like everybody else. In your experience, do you prefer knowing what’s going to come next? [laughs] WATERSTON: Well, you have to, in a way, because you’re a producer.

“I wanted to do a television show that showed the realities of being an older woman.” Just how hard is it to be a woman seeking work in Hollywood after 50 (or 60, or 70), I ask. But I am 77 years old now, and those opportunities just aren’t there.” She holds up her hands to take in the full sweep of the suite, sculptures, chandeliers and all, before adding. So, for us, it’s all about trying to stay young.” • Jane Fonda says Hanoi Jane photo will hurt "to my grave" Unusually for someone in her position, Fonda has been open about her efforts in this department – having cosmetic surgery on her jowls, eyelids and the bags under her eyes. I have friends – one of whom is the beloved Vanessa Redgrave – who have allowed us to see them age. When I mention the phrase sex symbol, though, she scoffs.

“I haven’t been put up in the Waldorf for a long time.” Tulea, sound asleep on the sofa beside her, looks like she could get used to it. “It is OK for men to get older, because men become more desirable by being powerful. Is that kind of surgical intervention essential for an actress who wishes to continue working in Hollywood after a certain age? “Because of Barbarella, people think that I was kind of a glamour queen,” she says, looking dubious.

However, the thrice-married, thrice-divorced Fonda believes the comedy also has a serious point to make, in finally representing women of her generation on screen. It’s not like it’s too much, it’s not like you can’t see my wrinkles, right? “But I think it probably bought me a decade of work.” For the record, she looks good for 77, but without the terrifyingly frozen or suspiciously smooth appearance acquired by many devotees of the surgeon’s knife.
